Agentic commerce is buying and selling in which AI agents do part of the work for a person or a business. An agent can search for products, compare offers, prepare a cart or place an order with the right approval. How far it can go depends on what the merchant supports and what the customer has delegated.
A shopping trip in three steps
- Understand the request. “I need a carry-on by Friday, under €180 and no taller than 55 centimetres including the wheels.” That gives the agent more to work with than the search term “suitcase”.
- Check the offers. It compares dimensions including wheels, the total price and the delivery date. If the dimensions are unclear, it asks for clarification or flags the uncertainty.
- Take the next step. The customer can review the options, continue in the merchant’s shop or approve a purchase the agent has prepared. The merchant supplies the information behind that decision.
What makes it a shopping agent?
A chat window is an interface. What matters is whether the assistant can take a request, gather the information from appropriate sources and carry out an allowed next step. A shop can start with a simple task, such as finding compatible spare parts and adding them to a list. Small tasks like that make it easy to see whether the experience is genuinely easier for the customer.
